How to Recycle Hard-to-Recycle Items in Greater Cincinnati

If you live anywhere near Hamilton or Cincinnati, you probably already know the basics of curbside recycling. Paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, aluminum cans. You know how to recycle hard-to-recycle items? That part is less straightforward. But what about the stuff your blue bin was never designed to handle? Batteries, old electronics, beauty product packaging, plastic film, textile recycling, and all those flexible pouches that seem to multiply in every kitchen drawer.

I run a small woodworking business here in Hamilton, and keeping waste out of landfills is something I think about every day. So I put together this recycling guide to help you recycle hard-to-recycle items in the Greater Cincinnati area. Every program listed here is one I've either used myself or verified through the provider's website.

The Golden Rule: Empty, Clean, Dry

Before you drop anything off or mail it in, most recycling programs ask that items be rinsed and dried. Contaminated materials can ruin an entire batch of recyclables, which defeats the purpose. A quick rinse under the faucet is usually all it takes.

    Oral Care Waste

Toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes, floss containers, and brush heads are all accepted through the Crest and Oral-B Recycle On Us program. You print a free shipping label, box up your items, and mail them in. No cost to you. I keep a small bag under the bathroom sink and mail it once it's full.

    Beauty Product Packaging

Compacts, mascara tubes, pumps, and caps from any brand are accepted at Nordstrom BEAUTYCYCLE bins. The Kenwood location near Cincinnati has one. These are the kinds of items that look like they should be recyclable but aren't accepted curbside because they're made from mixed materials.

    Batteries

Never throw batteries in your regular recycling or trash. Tape the terminals (a strip of clear tape works fine) and bring them to a Call2Recycle drop-off bin. You'll find them at Home Depot, Lowe's, and Staples locations throughout the Cincinnati recycling area. Check the Call2Recycle store locator for accepted battery types at your nearest location.

    Electronics

Best Buy and Staples both accept many small electronics and accessories. Best Buy typically limits you to three items per household per day, and fees vary depending on what you're dropping off. Larger items like TVs and monitors usually have a recycling fee. For people asking where to recycle electronics in the Cincinnati area, these two retailers are the most accessible options.

    Plastic Bags, Wraps, and Film

This is one that trips people up. Plastic bags and film (the stretchy kind, like grocery bags and bread bags) cannot go in your curbside bin. They tangle the sorting equipment at the recycling facility. Instead, look for the Store Drop Off label on the packaging. If it says #2 HDPE or #4 LDPE, bring it to a participating store's collection bin. Most grocery stores in the Hamilton ohio recycling area have one near the entrance.

Flexible Packaging (Chip Bags, Bubble Wrap, Foam)

Greater Cincinnati participates in the Hefty ReNew program through Rumpke. You buy the orange bags, fill them with chip bags, bubble mailers, foam packaging, and other flexible plastics, tie the bag, and place it in your regular curbside recycling cart. Rumpke sorts it separately. This is one of the easiest programs to use because it doesn't require a special trip anywhere.

The One-Stop Local Option: Cincinnati Recycling and Reuse Hub

If you want to handle multiple categories in one trip, the Cincinnati Recycling and Reuse Hub accepts a wide variety of materials for recycling or reuse. Some items have a small fee, so check their current accepted items list before you go. This is the closest thing we have to a "bring everything" location in the area.

    Hazardous Household Items

Paint, light bulbs, chemicals, and other hazardous materials need special handling. The Hamilton County R3Source search tool lets you find drop-off locations, shredding events, and collection sites for hazardous household products. Bookmark it. You'll use it more than you think.

    Quick Reference: What Goes Where

Oral care waste goes to Crest and Oral-B Recycle On Us (mail-in). Beauty packaging goes to Nordstrom BEAUTYCYCLE bins. Batteries go to Call2Recycle bins at Home Depot, Lowe's, or Staples. Electronics go to Best Buy or Staples. Plastic bags and film go to store drop-off bins (look for #2 or #4). Flexible packaging goes in Hefty ReNew orange bags with your curbside cart. Everything else goes through the Cincinnati Recycling Hub or R3Source tool.

    How PRWMade Approaches Waste

Sustainability isn't just something I write about. It's built into how I run PRWMade. Every order ships in plantable seed paper packaging that grows wildflowers instead of sitting in a landfill. I use minimal plastic, produce in small batches to reduce waste, and source wood responsibly. You can read more about the woods I use and where they come from.

If you're trying to reduce waste in your own life, even small steps add up. Recycling that bag of batteries sitting in your junk drawer is a good place to start.
